Is it Time to Replace Your Vehicle’s Brake Fluid?

Inarguably, one of the most important systems on your vehicle is your brakes. Whether you need to brake quickly to avoid a collision, or you’re just pulling up to a stop sign, you want to know that every time you press the pedal, your car will come to a complete stop. Keeping an eye on your brake fluid is an easy way to observe the overall health of the many components in your brake system.

While brake fluid exists in a sealed chamber, it can still be contaminated by dirt, debris, and water, rendering it less effective. The hydraulic brake system relies on that fluid to work and overtime, the fluid can simply break down due to age. It should be clear, or a pale yellow in color. This means your brake fluid is still fresh and your brake system is clean. If it turns grey or black, it could be a sign of trouble, like bad seals somewhere in the system. This could lead to a leak or brake failure, so it’s wise to have it checked out.

The level also shouldn’t change on your brake fluid, the way your coolant or oil might. If you see a drop in fluid, see your technician. The system could be leaking, which not only means your brakes will be less effective, but also that the highly-corrosive fluid could be causing damage elsewhere on your vehicle. Any observed leaks should be repaired as quickly as possible.

Check your manual for advice on brake fluid: recommended intervals vary widely depending on the make and model of the car. Service to replace your brake fluid doesn’t take long and it’s not a complicated procedure, so it’s an easy yes. Replacing rusted-out brake parts due to moisture can cost much more in the long run. When the brake pads, rotors, drums, or shoes are replaced, it’s a perfect time to have the fluid flushed.
