Changing a tire

With winter in full swing, it’s important to take the correct precautions for driving during this potentially dangerous time of year.
In winter, nighttime comes earlier and days are often gloomy, so you need every edge you can get on the road. In many regions, even those that don’t see much snow or experience frigid temperatures, the change of seasons is a good time to make sure you’ve taken some steps to keep you safe on the road.

Stay visible. When there are fewer hours of daylight, you rely more heavily upon your vehicle’s lighting system. Have your battery and charging system checked for proper operation. A low-charging level or weak battery can lead to reduced output from the headlights, putting you at a disadvantage for spotting and avoiding obstacles. In addition, you need to ensure that all of your car’s other lights are operating properly, including the tail and stop lights, blinkers, position lamps and even reverse lamps. These lights help you stay visible to other cars on the road and clue them into your next move, thereby increasing your chances of being spotted.

Check your battery. Your battery is extremely important in helping your car start during cold temperatures. When the temperature drops to freezing or below, vehicles have a harder time getting going. Oil runs thicker, which makes the engine harder to turn over for the starter motor. Battery output dips with the temperature, too, so it’s important to make sure yours has enough power to make it to the starting circuit, and that there’s enough in reserve. A battery that turns the engine slowly in the cold may just need its terminals cleaned, or there may be a cable in need of repair or replacement. This is a problem that will strike its hardest at the absolute worst moment.

Check the tires. Your tire pressure can drop by up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit, which means you could be driving around with seriously under-inflated tires, thereby making handling less predictable. In regions that get significant winter precipitation, it’s a good idea to invest in a set of winter tires for an edge in turning and stopping when it’s sloppy and slick.

Check your coolant. It may sound counter-intuitive to make sure the engine cooling system, and the coolant itself, are up to snuff when it’s cold outside. But consider this: the cooling system provides your cabin heat, and coolant is a mix of alcohol, water, and additives to prevent low-temperature freezing of the engine.

Prepare for emergencies. Carrying a few simple things can make a big difference, too. Pack a blanket so you can stay warm without having to run the engine if you get stuck for a prolonged period of time. A flashlight and some extra batteries, extra window washer, a compact shovel and even a small bag of sand for emergency traction are all good items to keep in your car. An emergency kit with jumper cables, road flares and a couple of basic tools will go a long way toward keeping you alive and safe in the worst circumstances.

Winter needn’t be something to be afraid of if you plan ahead. Having a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic and keeping an emergency kit in your car will go a long way to keeping you safe on the road this winter.

The biggest question our Brand Specialists are asked is: Should I wait? With lower supply and seemingly higher payments than the last time you bought or leased, we understand any hesitation. To help you decide the best answer to that question, we’ve come up with a few things to ask yourself and keep in mind while on the lookout for your next vehicle.

Are interest rates going down or going up?
This question can be a tough one, especially if you haven’t been in the market for quite some time. A quick tip would be to search “fed interest rate” and find a reliable source you trust for information. How has inflation impacted interest rates, and what are others predicting? If you feel like interest rates are on the rise, so will your lease or finance payments, which means securing your new vehicle now would be more beneficial.

Safety in newer technology.
A new vehicle is a great investment in safety for yourself and your family. With technology and safety features more prevalent in today’s vehicles than ever before, vehicles made even 5 years ago are no longer up to standard when it comes to safety. If your vehicle is missing important features – such as a back-up camera or blind-spot monitoring, it may be time to upgrade.

Does my current vehicle require costly repairs?
The older the vehicle, the more repairs you may need in the future. If you’ve been on the fence about trading, selling or upgrading your older vehicle, it may help to consider how much you could save by having a more reliable vehicle that’s still under warranty.

Are you looking to trade-in your current vehicle?
Used car trade-in values can easily change with the current market. The average used car sold for six percent higher than in 2021, after several months of used car supply and demand changes. With new car inventory taking longer to catch up to its demand, it may be a good time to receive the best offer for your trade.

Will the residual values of gas combustion vehicles be higher or lower 3 years from now when up to 50% of all vehicles sold will be electric?
Most industry experts predict a swift transition from gas to electric cars in just the next few years. So what will your gas engine powered vehicle be worth? Time will tell, and markets will determine actual values, but the banks and finance institutions feel they will be a harder sell, so residual values are dropping fast. We predict this trend will continue, and your lease payments will rise dramatically across our product line as time goes by. Click here for an in-depth explanation.

Hopefully you find these questions and topics able to help you decide whether you’re ready to purchase or lease sooner than later. Whatever you decide, we are always here to help make this an easy experience with our convenient Pick-up & Delivery service that lets you test drive, purchase, or service your vehicle from home. Our Brand Specialists are here for when you’re ready!

Chevy Super Cruise

Where will hands-free driving take you with Chevy Super Cruise™? Using LiDAR mapping technology, we’ve mapped over 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada to give you the most in hands-free. Available Super Cruise™ is the first true hands-free driving-assistance technology for compatible roads, utilizing advanced technologies to provide the ease and convenience of hands-free driving, even while changing lanes, thanks to Lane Change on Demand, offered on Super Cruise-equipped vehicles.

With an attentive driver, and under the proper conditions, Super Cruise-equipped vehicles can permit hands-free operation of the vehicle. Super Cruise works with Adaptive Cruise Control, which controls acceleration and braking while it is enabled and operating. Super Cruise functions with Chevy Connected Services and uses real-time precise positioning, cameras, sensors and LiDAR map data to help detect every curve, helping to make long drives and commutes comfortable and more convenient. Trailering allows the driver the opportunity to pull a trailer, camper and more while driving hands-free.

When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention and all other driving conditions are met (lane markings visible, GPS available, no system faults, etc.) a white Super Cruise symbol will display on the instrument cluster. After activating Super Cruise, once the steering wheel light bar turns green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel. Do not remove your hands unless the light bar is green, which indicates that Super Cruise is steering the vehicle. To disengage Super Cruise, press the Super Cruise button again, press the brake pedal or pull the Regen on Demand paddle.

Chevy Vehicles

As the future of automotive becomes more electric, many of us will be switching from traditional combustion engines to our first battery electric vehicles. As exciting as the future can seem, many of us will have a lot of questions (and maybe even range anxiety) when it comes to making the switch. With Chevy leading the way with an extensive EV lineup, we’re here to hopefully quell some of those anxieties. With the anticipated launch of the all-electric Silverado, Blazer, and Equinox models, Chevy will be able to fit any lifestyle.

Thanks to the estimated 247 mile battery life on the Bolt EUV, the average commuter will leave every day with a full charge from their home charger. This gives you the ability to not only save hundreds on gas throughout the year, but maintenance as well. If you are on a trip, no need to worry – at a public fast charger you can pick up 76 miles in as little as 10 minutes. From our store in Fairfield, that means you can make it to your home in Great Barrington, MA, Montauk, NY, Point Pleasant, NJ, or Mount Vernon, NY to charge overnight.

To make your electric life even easier, Chevrolet will cover standard installation of a Level 2 charging outlet for eligible customers who purchase or lease a 2022 or 2023 Bolt EUV or Bolt EV. You will be able to experience how easy it is to live electric as most of your charging will be done at your convenience in your own home. Right now at Maritime Chevy, we have a limited selection of the Ultium PowerUP Level 2 charger – the most efficient at-home charger created specifically for your Chevy EV. You can enjoy enhanced and connected features that allow you to monitor energy use and cost, and personalize charging needs in real-time from the myChevy app. Contact one of our certified EV consultants today for more details on this QMerit offer. Our Ultium PowerUP Level 2 11.5kw charging stations are available for only $599, and they will plug right into the charging outlet installed by QMerit.

Based on limited availability, we recommend that you reserve an incoming or future EV model as soon as possible, even if owning an EV is a year down the road! Orders will be filled for those on waitlists and reservations first, so you don’t want to miss out on receiving your first electric model. Enjoy the benefit of less scheduled maintenance, over the air updates, and save an average of $4,387 over 5 years in fuel and maintenance prices for someone that drives 15k miles per year. If you think the price of gas will go up over the next few years like we do, the savings will be even more. Plus, you’ll put ZERO emissions into our environment as your new EV doesn’t even have an exhaust pipe – nothing gets burned!

Unlike the old process of visiting a dealership to pick a vehicle out of stock, your new electric vehicles will be built to order. Over time, this process should be easier and more efficient for your transportation plan – just remember to choose Maritime Chevrolet as your pick-up point. If you prefer, we can even deliver your new vehicle right to your home with our Maritime Concierge Service. We’ll also pick-up and deliver your vehicle for any service.

Reserve now, or join the waitlist to get on electric consideration with no obligation – if you change your mind, you can always cancel. Vehicles that are available for reservation only require a $100 dollar credit card deposit.

Electric Vehicle

On September 22nd, Chevrolet hosted a special all-electric driving experience in Venice California. Electric Avenue saw locals being able to drive an all-electric Chevy and learn the benefits of becoming an EV owner. Most attendees found themselves in an electric vehicle for the first time and were able to see what their future could entail if they owned one, including convenient home charging, range options, and more.

The event was in honor of National Drive Electric Week – a nationwide celebration intended to raise awareness of the many benefits of electric vehicles. While customers were able to drive the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, several other Chevrolet EV models were on display for attendees to view. This included the 2024 Blazer EV and 2024 Equinox EV models that are set to hit the market in 2023.

It may seem a little daunting to make the switch into an electric vehicle, but you would be surprised how easy it actually is. Most of your charging will be done at home thanks to our partnership with Ultium. The installation is quick and easy, and once it’s complete, you’ll never have to worry about waiting for others to charge in public. If you find yourself in a location that prevents you from installing your own charger, Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers make for convenient charging options throughout the country.

More Horsepower, More Speed.

The Chevy Tahoe has always been a favorite when it comes to a full-size SUV. For 2023, Chevrolet has taken the Tahoe a step further with more horsepower and speed than any previous model with the 2023 Tahoe RST Performance Edition. This special edition four-wheel-drive Taho is ready to impress performance enthusiasts as well as any Chevy driver. Chevrolet Performance induction and exhaust systems in this package will increase output of the standard 6.2L V-8 to 433 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of torque. On the special edition, the 6.2L V-8 engine continues to be exclusively paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission.

“The 2023 Tahoe RST Performance Edition is designed for those who want the best of both worlds — the everyday comfort and capability of a full-size SUV along with the driving excitement of a true performance vehicle,” said Scott Bell, Chevrolet vice president. “It leverages the proven capability of Chevy’s pursuit-rated police vehicle packages and motorsports success to offer a confident, engaging driving experience for our customers.”

The new Tahoe RST Performance Edition leverages a number of chassis, suspension and other elements from the pursuit-rated Tahoe PPV package for police. Standard components, borrowed from the pursuit-rated Tahoe include:

  • Police-spec springs, retuned dampers and police-spec chassis calibrations
  • Police-spec lower ride height of 0.4 inch (10 mm) in front and 0.8 inch (20 mm) in the rear
  • Brembo® front and rear brakes with unique Torch Red calipers. The front brake rotors are nearly 25% larger in diameter than the standard RST system
  • Performance-calibrated brake pedal feel
  • Police-spec Firestone Firehawk Pursuit 275/55R20 tires with specific 20-inch aluminum wheels in black

The RST Performance Edition also has the numbers to back up its carefully calibrated systems:

  • 0-60 mph in 5.78 seconds (compared to 5.95 seconds on base RST)
  • Quarter mile in 14.2 seconds at 97 mph on the test track (compared to 14.4 seconds at 97 mph on base RST)
  • 60-0 mph braking in 133 feet (compared to 139.4 feet on base RST)
  • Top speed of 124 mph on the test track (compared to 112 mph on base RST)
  • That performance does not come at the expense of true SUV capability, as the Performance Edition offers the same 7,600-pound trailering capacity as the base RST when equipped with the 6.2L engine.

The new RST Performance Edition will also come standard with the Luxury Package, which will include a collection of active safety and convenience systems. You’ll find a black “RST” badge on the rear tailgate, with standard sport pedals inside to elevate the performance look and feel.

The Tahoe RST Performance Edition will make its public debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The package is priced at a starting MSRP4 of $8,525 and will be exclusively available on the 2023 Tahoe RST with the 6.2L V-8 engine. Production begins in Q4 2022 with U.S. and globally sourced parts at GM’s Arlington Assembly in Texas.

Your car’s oil might be the first thing you think of when you hear “vehicle fluids,” but there are several others that play critical roles in making your car perform at its peak. While some of these fluids don’t need to be changed all that often, it’s still a good idea to have them checked regularly.

Transmission Fluid
Similar to engine oil, transmission fluid keeps the important moving parts in your vehicle’s transmission running smoothly. Both automatic and manual transmission vehicles need to have this fluid replaced periodically. In a manually shifted vehicle, replacement generally occurs more often, typically between every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Automatic transmissions don’t need this service done as often—generally every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

Coolant
Also known as anti-freeze, engine coolant is responsible for keeping in check the enormous heat generated by your vehicle’s engine. If the coolant needs to be replaced, it’s simply a matter of draining the coolant, flushing the system out, and filling it with fresh coolant. Not keeping coolant properly filled or letting it get too old can cause rust and corrosion inside the cooling system, and that ain’t good.

Windshield Washer Fluid
Of all the fluids in your vehicle, this one is the easiest and cheapest to maintain. When winter descends and the roads get nasty, having a full reservoir of windshield washer fluid can mean the difference between seeing what’s ahead and trying desperately to see through a filthy windshield.

Brake Fluid
Just as important as having healthy brake pads and rotors is having good brake fluid. This fluid transmits the pressure generated by stepping on the brake pedal to the brake calipers, which then squeeze the rotors and slow or stop your vehicle. One symptom of needing to change the brake fluid is a “squishy” brake pedal, which may require extra pressure to engage. Depending on the climate where you live, brake fluid can actually absorb moisture and degrade over time, so be sure to keep an eye on this. Also, make sure it’s serviced according to your owner’s manual.

Power Steering Fluid
Clearly, having a properly functioning steering system is essential to your safety and the health of your vehicle. Power steering fluid plays a key role in the steering process, and it keeps the all-important power steering pump in good working order. It’s not often this hydraulic fluid needs to be replaced, but it’s a good idea to follow your owner’s manual and have it serviced at the recommended intervals.

Blinker Fluid
Unfamiliar with this one? Just ask your mechanic.

The Maritime Chevy Service Department can take all of the guesswork out of fluid changes for you. If your vehicle is in need of service or if you have any questions, contact us online and we’ll take care of all your vehicle’s fluid needs.

Front 3/4 view of Silverado ZR2 Bison in wooded area.

The recent launch of the first-ever Silverado ZR2 took the pickup market by storm – rightfully so. As a follow-up, Chevrolet announced the first-ever special edition Silverado ZR2 Bison in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). This special collaboration has created a unique new Silverado tuned to unlock new heights in off-road capability.

“The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Bison is the ultimate half-ton truck for backcountry adventures,” said AEV CEO and Founder Dave Harriton. “The Silverado ZR2 Bison checks all the boxes — robust stamped steel bumpers, complete underbody protection, a factory-tuned off-road suspension, and locking differentials front and rear. We are confident off-road enthusiasts are going to love this truck.”

This truck reaches new levels of off-road confidence also in part due to the high-quality steel integrated in the AEV bumpers and underbody protection. The AEV-stamped steel front and rear bumpers are constructed of 3-millimeter-thick steel and are powder and e-coated. The press-hardened steel used for the underbody skid plates is three-and-a-half times stronger than an equivalent cold-stamped high-strength steel plate and provides incredible resistance to underbody damage.

AEV, a premium off-road aftermarket manufacturer, has a strong track record in providing expedition accessories. The 2019 Colorado ZR2 Bison easily became the most popular special edition for the Colorado, giving the Silverado ZR2 Bison an incredible starting point for GM and AEV engineers.

Not yet available to buy, but Maritime Chevy can’t wait to have this state-of-the-art off-road vehicle on our lot! Click here for a deeper dive into the Silverado ZR2 Bison.

Seven-eighths view of 2024 Blazer EV PPV in Sterling Gray Metallic, parked in front of a police station. Preproduction model shown. Actual production model may vary. 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV available winter 2023.

As the future becomes more electric, with more local municipalities implementing carbon reduction plans and targets, Chevy is prepared to advance the market in all aspects. The all-new 2024 Blazer EV PPV has been created to help achieve state carbon reduction plans without compromising performance and capability for officers. Chevy is proud to offer the first pursuit-rated, all-electric Chevrolet after tailoring vehicles for law enforcement for more than sixty years.

“Chevy’s commitment to meeting the needs of law enforcement is rooted in decades of cooperation with police agencies across North America,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet. “This purpose-built electrified Blazer EV PPV will have excellent pursuit performance, the reliability of a Chevrolet and fast-charging necessary to be a high-performance patrol vehicle.”

Based on the upcoming Blazer EV SS, the Blazer EV PPV will be offered with specific police content including skid plates, police-rated tires, steel wheels and additional emergency equipment support. It will also have the capability for light-duty towing for items such as radar trailers, as well as the capability for bicycle racks when equipped with a dealer-installed Class 1 trailer hitch. Additionally, the Blazer EV PPV has a low center of gravity, thanks to the roughly 1,200-pound (544 kg) battery pack mounted low in the chassis. It also employs Brembo brakes based on the high-performance Blazer EV SS, which are designed to offer superior stopping power.

Many patrol cars spend a lot of their time idling, creating emissions from running a gasoline engine to support the electrical loads of a law enforcement vehicle. Chevrolet is utilizing the largest possible Ultium battery available for this Blazer EV PPV to support the electrical needs of a patrol car needed for law enforcement.
