As the coronavirus continues to spread across the country far and wide, sports fans are getting closer and closer to their favorite leagues seasons starting back up again. With many schedules set to begin within the next couple months, many are wondering exactly how sports will return and what the new “normal” will look like. According to an article from ESPN, it looks like many leagues will host games without fans as a way to combat the spread of the virus. As strange and unfortunate as this sounds, I’m sure many fans are just excited to be able to tune into a live game on TV from the safety and comfort of their homes.

Some of the most popular leagues such as the MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL are highlighted at the beginning of this article. The MLB is set to reopen July 23, with the plan to host games in their own ballparks. The NFL is set to reopen regular season on September 10, with team facilities already open. The NBA is set to reopen its season on July 30, with all 22 teams playing and practicing at the Disney Sports Complex near Orlando. Lastly, the NHL is set to reopen training camps on July 13, with games set to begin August 1.

In these strange times, there are no straightforward answers. For most die-hard fans however, watching their favorite teams and players on TV is surely better than nothing at all. Exploring the great outdoors is a wonderful thing to do now that it’s officially summer, but it’s a joy that brings with it the potential pain of ticks. Ticks lurk just off of trails and in fields, thriving on moisture and humidity and waiting for hosts to pass by. When bitten by one, you are at risk for a number of diseases including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease. To help avoid the scourge of ticks and the diseases they carry while avoiding the use of harmful chemicals, try these natural methods for tick protection.

Lycopersicon hirsutum

According to CDC.gov, the wild tomato plant, or Lycopersicon hirsutum, is a natural resource for the active ingredient 2-undecanone. The essential oil from the leaves and stems of the plant can be applied to skin, clothing and any gear being carried as a means to repel ticks. Applying up to 10 drops to your clothing or skin can help prevent attracting the attention of ticks.

Lavender

According to LiveStrong.com, lavender has tested favorably as a natural means to ward off ticks and prevent tick eggs from hatching. To get natural protection for yourself, utilize no more than 10 drops of lavender essential oil by mixing into the rinse when doing laundry, by spraying it on clothing and backpacks or by applying to skin.

Homemade vinegar-based repellent

OhSimply.com recommends another homemade concoction that scares ticks away. In a spray bottle, mix approximately two cups of distilled white vinegar with one cup of water and about 20 drops of a bath oil scent of your choice. Eucalyptus, citrus and peppermint are recommended for their strong smells, which not only serve to cover up the odor of vinegar, but also help repel ticks on their own. It is recommended that the mixture be reapplied about every four hours or so for maximum effect.

Neem seed oil

According to a study published at ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, neem seed oil proves 100% effective at killing certain tick larvae within 27 hours. As with other essential oils, neem seed oil can be blended with vinegar and oil to be used as a spray to naturally repel ticks.

Treat your pets regularly

Even away from the outdoors, it is possible to have a tick latch onto you that has come into your home via your pet. Using natural remedies on your pets helps reduce your risk for getting ticks at home. CDC.com recommends consulting with your veterinarian to learn about your options for regular treatment of pets.

Awareness

Perhaps the simplest and most natural way to stay clear of ticks is to know how to truly avoid them. CDC.gov recommends that, when hiking or engaging in any outdoor activity, you avoid shrubs and leaf litter and stay as close to the center of a path as possible. At home, you can help make your yard tick-free by removing leaf litter, keeping the grass short, and laying wood chips or gravel between your lawn and any wooded area.

Ticks are not only disgusting to look at and painful once they’ve become attached, but the effects that they can leave on your body can be devastating. Keep yourself free of them by knowing where they might live and how to rid yourself of them quickly, and get back to enjoying the great outdoors once more.

Answer the following questions honestly. Did you recently make a batch of cookies that could have doubled as hockey pucks for the NHL? Current guidance from the Food and Drug Administration states that “there is no evidence to suggest that food produced in the United States can transmit COVID-19.” That being said, there are certain precautions that need to be taken. This includes minimizing any contact between you and the delivery driver, removing all food from the takeout bags and containers before eating, and wiping down any surfaces that the bags and containers have touched.

Located on Farwell St. in West Haven, CT, Thermaxx is run by 75 employees and has been in business in CT for 25 years. The CFO, Larry Campana, received a phone call from the owner of Thermaxx one day with a promise to a Fire Chief that he had to keep –

“We have a joke at Thermaxx that our owner makes promises and it’s our job to keep those promises. So he called us and said ‘hey, I just promised a fire chief we were going to make him 10 medical gowns.”

Before announcing their decision to make protective gowns, Thermaxx was faced with the decision of what to do. Like all businesses in the world right now, the decision was to shut their doors or figure something else out. Luckily, the Thermaxx team figured out the “something else”, now it’s about the how, how do you create protective gowns?

Four prototypes later, Thermaxx created a disposable gown, made of house wrap, readily available.

“It actually makes sense because what we are trying to do is to keep things out, keep out moisture and particles and that’s what you wrap a house in when it’s under construction. You wrap it so things can’t get in,” says Campana during a WTNH interview.

Thermaxx quickly converted its insulation blanket factory line to make the promised disposable gowns for first responders.

Before March, this Connecticut-based manufacturer had never made a product for humans, but now that they do, they’re sharing their knowledge.

According to TJ McCue, of Medium.com, “Within two days of announcing their disposable gown over 2,000 were requested by over 40 organizations from hospitals to fire departments. By April 1st, 130 groups had requested more than 5,000 gowns from Thermaxx.”

According to Campana, Fire departments, EMS and nursing homes were leaving compelling comments on the company web page, saying, “We are out. We are in dire need. Our need is immediate. We will come and pick it up.”

Thermaxx can barely keep up, but with what needs they can fill, they’re doing so by donating and absorbing all of the cost. Not only that, but they are also making their gown design available to the public.. Campana proudly says, “We just have an incredible group of people, that’s doing the right thing. It’s amazing.

Greenwich Alliance for Education Is Pivoting To Meet The Needs

It has been a month since teachers and students interacted face to face in the classrooms to discuss and discover new concepts, research and report on interesting facts, practice reading skills by holding a book together, collaborate and solve problems in small groups, learn simple and complex math problems and equations, and act as a learning community as we have always known it to be. At an instance, school-based education has changed to distance learning – teachers are teaching from their homes and students are learning from their homes –with this huge transformation in the educational experience the Greenwich Alliance for Education is pivoting to meet the short and long-term ­needs of the Greenwich Public Schools – teachers and students.

We are funding school supplies for both students and teachers, contributing to the GEA COVID-19 Response Fund, and are funding a request to purchase books for every student at New Lebanon School as the absence of books was being noted by the teachers. We can handle more of these educational requests right away.

We continue to focus, in particular, on the AVID community – teachers, students, and alums. (AVID implementation was funded by the Greenwich Alliance). AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination – a college readiness system is taught to over 300 students at Greenwich High School and Western and Central Middle Schools and has graduated over 200 students. AVID students represent many of the families whom the district is providing school lunches and internet hot spots and who are receiving food and other services from other local agencies. For the AVID students and the AVID alums, we are building up our mentoring program, setting up a job board for money-earning projects, continuing to fund our college scholarships – as this is as critical as ever, and maybe assisting with paying for internet accounts should this issue arise.

It is a distinct role that the Greenwich Alliance for Education plays in the community as the local education foundation supporting the Greenwich Public Schools. While we never envisioned a time when school would happen entirely from home, we are here for our educators and students to immediately react and respond to their needs. We thank all of those who are working in healthcare and in the many essential businesses for the benefit of the community. We are looking forward to all reconnecting in the classrooms again.
