Bring color to your yard with plants that thrive during winter!
The winter season brings its annual delivery of cold temperatures and snowfall, but those frosty conditions don’t mean your outdoor garden has to lose its green. Keep your garden patches thriving with one of these plants that flourish during the coldest months of the year.
Vegetables
Planting vegetables in your garden has a dual purpose. Not only will vegetables keep your dinner table piled high with fresh goods all year long, but they also add a touch of green to your plot of land. Onions, turnips, garlic, cabbage and carrots should be planted in late spring if you want to cook them up during the winter. You can also plant them during autumn for harvesting the following spring. Garden experts Thompson & Morgan promise that despite the work it takes to get these ground-growing plants rooted, the fruits of your labor will pay off all season long.
Snowdrops
If you can’t wait for the snow to melt in order to see signs of spring peeking from the ground, plant Snowdrops throughout your yard. These small, delicate white blooms are one of the first flowers to bloom every spring. They can even survive a late snowfall, which makes Snowdrops perfect for the winter season. If you want to see these bell-shaped blossoms covering your yard, find a shaded patch underneath a tree where the bulbs can thrive.
Hellebores
Few plants are as durable and easy to grow as Hellebore. They bloom early, and their vivid, cup-shape blooms complement ivory Snowdrops well. Hellebores, translated as the Christmas rose, are evergreen perennials that come alive as early as January. Fine Gardening promises that these lively plants will spruce up your garden all year round thanks to the wide spectrum of colors they offer, including shades of pink.
Camellias
Certain plants will bloom from fall to spring, and the camellia is one of them. Most popular in the southern United States, this evergreen plant is known for its full, colorful blooms that come in all shapes and colors depending on the variety. Often compared to a rose, this vivid bloom will made a striking addition to your barren landscape during winter. If cared for correctly, these plants can thrive for 50 to 100 years, according to House Logic. Just make sure the roots set before winter and keep the plants shielded from rough winds.
Holly
What would the holidays be without the presence of a vivid green and red evergreen holly bush? Invite holiday cheer into your yard with one of 400 varieties that range from small shrubs to outstretched trees. Even other winterberry shrubs that don’t have flowers can brighten your yard. Consider planting firethorn, chokecherry or Virginia creeper in addition to your evergreen holly. These red-berry bushes will attract birds to your yard-another way of bringing life to your landscape.
Planting and maintaining vegetables, trees and shrubs throughout the winter takes hard work and preparation, not to mention the right soil and healthy bulbs. However, your labor will pay off when your barren yard is transformed to a thriving winter wonderland. This article is presented by Maritime Chevrolet in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Three Gutter Cleaning Hacks
3 Gutter Cleaning Hacks
Ingenious ways to work around traditional gutter cleaning
Cleaning out the gutters is one of the least popular chores that homeowners have to endure-not only because it is time-consuming, but because it can be genuinely dangerous, as well. Traditional gutter cleaning requires ladder climbing, which can lead to falls and injuries. One way to play it safe is to avoid ever setting foot on a ladder-a definite challenge, but one that is made possible by these inventive gutter hacks.
Gutter Blaster
On the TruTV program “Hack My House,” house “hackspert” David Switalski demonstrated the proper way to create and use a “gutter blaster.” Using an electric leaf blower, two-inch PVC pipe, duct tape and pipe fittings, Switalski was able to make a helpful and clever device that saves homeowners from climbing up ladder steps.Use a tape measure to measure from the height of your hip to the height of the gutter, and then cut your 2-inch PVC pipe to that same exact length. Next, attach some pipe fittings to one end of the pipe to create a bend that will cause the air to blow downwards. Then, attach the other end of the pipe to your leaf blower, using duct tape to create a temporary but secure bond. And voila-now you have a way to blow leaves out of your gutter from the comfort of your yard. To see a video demonstration of the gutter blaster in action, go to http://www.trutv.com/shows/hack-my-life/videos/hack-my-house-gutter-blaster.html
Waterworks
Although it may seem a little ironic, water can actually be an effective tool for cleaning out your gutters. Although a hard rain may leave your gutters messier than ever, a concentrated and carefully controlled stream of water can help eliminate heavy decaying debris. The website BobVilla.com recommends that homeowners who have a garden hose and connected outdoor spigot consider purchasing a long, telescoping hose with an angled, downward-pointing spray nozzle (and if necessary, a hose extender for reaching gutters). While an effective way to clear gutters and downspouts, the hose method does present some disadvantages. For starters, you are guaranteed to get wet while doing it, so be sure to wear your work clothes. Additionally, some mud will most likely find its way onto the roof and exterior walls of your home, as well sections of your lawn and driveway, which would require an additional round of rinsing and scrubbing.
Expand your tool shed
There are a few tools that are designed especially for the task of gutter clearing. Chief among them are “GutterTongs,” which are exactly what they sound like. GutterTongs work on any size or shape of gutters, eliminating the need for a ladder climbing by scooping out leaves with the same kind of tongs you would use to toss a salad (except these ones have arms that can reach up to 12 feet in height). The tongs can also be used to hold a hose in place, so that you can rinse your gutters out after clearing them of debris.Cultivators are another tool that can come in handy when cleaning gutters, if you happen to live in a single-story home, since they can extend to lengths of up to five or six feet. Though usually used to till soil, cultivators are also capable of getting leaves out of clogged gutters. These are just some of the ways that you can clear your gutters without ever leaving the ground. However, all of them still require a fair amount of work and special tools. To avoid even having to clean your gutters in the first place, consider upgrading your gutters to keep leaves out.

Chevrolet and Celebrities!
Chevrolet and Celebrities
Over time, Chevrolet has been a mainstay in popular culture. It doesn’t matter where, and it certainly doesn’t matter when, but wherever you look, there was probably a Chevy somewhere out there. Take a look at some celebrities who you may not have known who have driven a Chevy or two! Look for the link at the bottom for all of the photos!
Farrah Fawcett: This iconic actress was a start of the big and small screen. Farrah Fawcett was known to have an eccentric style and her 1970 Corvette only serves to reflect her iconic style. The former Charlie’s Angel had fur lining, mobile phone and even a TV! For more photos click here: https://imgur.com/a/yuU3ODV
American Astronauts: It all began when America’s first astronaut went into space. Alan Shepherd drove a ’57 Corvette to NASA and after his iconic launch into the heavens, GM gifted him the keys to a sweet looking ’62 Corvette! This began the love affair between astronauts and Corvette which still continues to this day. Check out a photo of the Apollo 12 in front of the Lunar Lander, with a few nice surprises in the background! For more photos click here: https://imgur.com/a/yuU3ODV
James Dean: This Rebel Without A Cause actor spoke to an entire generation. This famous actor was known to drive Porsche and Mercury vehicles, but we know his heart was always with his 1955 Chevy Delray Club Coupe. For more photos click here: https://imgur.com/a/yuU3ODV
Brian Wilson: If you’re a lover of music, we are sure you’ve heard of Brian Wilson. But on the off-chance that you haven’t, this member of the Beach Boys knew how to relax, work, and live while having a great time. Another fun fact is that he was a lover of Corvette. From Stingrays to the later C5 and C6 models, Brian Wilson knew how to drive in style, and he made sure everyone else knew it as well! For more photos click here: https://imgur.com/a/yuU3ODV
William Shatner: Beam me up Scotty! We’ve covered the men who went to space, but we haven’t really discussed the man who made going to other galaxies accessible to us. Meet William Shatner. We are sure you’ve seen him at least once whether it be on Star Trek, a game show or one of his many movies, but Shatner was also known to fancy a drive here and there in his own ’63 Corvette! Between that and his trusty dog next to his side, there’s not much else a person needs, right? For more photos click here: https://imgur.com/a/yuU3ODV

5 Ice-Cold Cocktail Ideas
Cool down with a delicious homemade cocktail!
It’s summer time! And what better way to celebrate than with an ice-cold beverage? These cocktail recipes, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, are great for all types of summer occasions – from an outdoor soiree to just hanging out with a few friends. They’re easy to make and don’t require having a lot of ingredients on hand, so you can whip them up anytime, anywhere. Try one of these fun summer cocktail ideas to cool you off all season long:
Cucumber Sangria
One sip of this drink and you (and your friends) will be begging for seconds. A creamy and fruity blend of all your favorites, cucumber sangria is sure to be a hit with everyone you know. First, cut a small honeydew in half and remove the rind and seeds. Cut the melon, a seedless cucumber and one lime, into thin slices. Throw that all into a pitcher. Next, squeeze about 1/4 cup of lime juice and a 1/4 cup of honey into a small bowl. Add with the juice, along with 12 mint leaves, to the melon mixture. Lastly, add a whole bottle of Sauvignon blanc or other semi-dry white wine. Cover and chill it in the refrigerator for about two hours. When it’s ready, pour one liter of carbonated water on top and you’re all set! If serving at a party, a garnish of fresh mint should please those detail-oriented folks.
Peach Daiquiri
Impress your friends who have a sweet tooth with this peachy drink. Slice and peel three cups of fresh peaches (or frozen peaches work just fine), and combine it with 12-ounce can of frozen limeade or lemonade concentrate, 1/4 cup of orange juice and two tablespoons of powdered sugar in a blender. Cover and blend until the mixture is smooth. As the blender is blending, gather two cups of ice cubes and gradually add them to the mixture. A sweet drink for a sweet occasion!
Gin Slush
Combine nine cups of water and two cups of granulated sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil for about 15 minutes. Next, remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool a bit. Then, slowly pour in one can of frozen orange juice concentrate and one can of frozen lemonade concentrate. Lastly, add two cups of your favorite gin and mix. Transfer the drink into a container and store in the fridge overnight. By the morning, you’ll have slushy goodness that you can scoop into a glass and top with lemon-lime soda, if you desire.
Blackberry and Bourbon Lemonade
If this doesn’t scream summer, nothing will. And with just four ingredients, making this refreshing cocktail couldn’t be easier. Measure out 1/4 cup of your favorite bourbon, 1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice and two teaspoons of blackberry-rosemary syrup in a cocktail shaker, combined with some ice. Shake for about 30 seconds or until the mixture is chilled. Then just strain the drink into a glass, add some ice, and pour about 1/3 of a cup of sparkling lemonade on top. If you’d like, garnish with a blackberry or two that you can enjoy after the drink.
Minty Iced Tea
There’s nothing wrong with plain iced tea, but this unique take on the classic is to die for. Start by combining seven cups of water and two cups of sugar in a large saucepan and bring to a boil while stirring. Then reduce the heat and simmer for about five minutes. Remove from the stove, and place eight orange-flavored tea bags and eight mint sprigs on the mixture. Let it sit for about five-10 minutes, then discard the bags and sprigs. Next, transfer the liquid into a heatproof bowl. Pour in another eight cups of water, two cups of orange juice and 3/4 lemon juice. Cover the tea and chill in the refrigerator for a minimum of four hours before serving. This drink is a sure-fire way to cool down on those particularly hot summer days! There’s nothing like a refreshing drink on a hot summer day, and these recipes will have you relaxing in no time. This article is presented by Maritime Chevy in Fairfield, Connecticut.
