Whiskey Fest at Great South Bay

Do you like Whiskey? What about other spirits? Well, if you’re a fan of fine whiskeys and true craftsmanship, you might want to clear your schedule on March 22nd from 7:00 to 10:00PM for a really great event. In the coming months, numerous tax systems will be voted on and/or implemented. The state of Connecticut has proposed a bill that would change the current dynamics of the automobile industry.

In addition to taxes on purchased vehicles, a new bill will propose that any car that is traded-in will be subjected to taxes as well! You will be charged on the car you are trading in, as well as the car that you are purchasing. This in essence creates a double tax situation.

The only other state to have accomplished something like this is California. Regardless of where you stand on this topic, Maritime Chevrolet urges you to make your voice heard!

Car Care: Keep Your Energy Up This Winter

They get you going, day in and day out, and nobody gives them a second thought until there’s a problem; however, there are some distinct signs of battery distress if you know what to look for. Here are some pointers to help prevent you from breaking down this winter.

Slow starts: Starting an engine when it’s sub-zero outside takes a lot of energy. To achieve reliable cold starts in freezing weather, your battery must supply a lot of electrical current. When you notice yourself crossing your fingers as your lights dim and your engine’s rhythm gets slower and slower, it’s time to be concerned.

One cause of this may be the battery itself. Before you condemn it, though, your service department can perform some checks. Electricity flows best through clean, tight connections, and that’s the first thing your mechanic will check. Over time, corrosion can build up on cables where the battery connects to the electrical system. Instead of conducting the juice, this corrosion acts as an insulator, meaning power can’t flow. When power can’t flow, you can’t go. Starts will be slow and nerve-wracking, and the battery itself may not charge back up.

It may not be the battery: A low battery might not be the cause of your problems, but a symptom. If the charging system can’t top up the battery , you’ll be stuck. Alternator problems sometimes show up as noticeable flickers from the lights. If your car has a voltmeter, you may notice the needle hanging lower than usual. It’s easy for a service professional to check that your charging system is putting out the proper voltage. And if it’s not, they’ll know what to do to get it back to its old energetic self.

Even if you don’t suspect any problems with your battery, it’s worth checking the next time your car is in for service. Our expert technicians will let you know if you need a new battery, or just a repair to your current one. Just a few minutes during a routine oil change can save you several hours of aggravation caused by a lackluster battery.

A piece of chocolate a day keeping the doctor away?

When one imagines the kind of indulgences that quickly derail diets, chocolate is certainly one of the first things to come to mind. It may come as something of a surprise, however, to learn that there are actually a number of health benefits to eating chocolate.Before you go grab a whole handful of chocolate candies, it is important to understand the caveats. If you eat chocolate with reckless abandon, you will gain unwanted weight. Commercial chocolate products are high in added fat and refined sugar, which adds up to unnecessary calories. Eating chocolate to excess puts you at risk not only for weight gain, but also for high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. As such, you should always eat chocolate in moderation; using a calorie-counting app to monitor your intake will help prevent adding on extra pounds.It is also important to note that not all chocolate is created equal. Of all varieties of chocolate, dark chocolate, cacao and cocoa are considered by several experts to have the most beneficial qualities. According to Scientific American, a 2012 review of 20 different studies found that daily, moderated consumption of dark chocolate or cocoa resulted in an average drop of two to three points in blood pressure readings over a period of time.To be sure that you are getting the proper benefits, Mary Engler, Ph.D., a professor of physiological nursing at the University of California at San Francisco, recommends to Women’s Health that, in a day, you eat no more than seven ounces of chocolate that consists of no less than 70 percent cacao or cocoa.Just what are those benefits, though?Antioxidants

According to WebMD, if a chocolate product contains a sizable amount of nonfat cocoa solids, then it tends to have a high level of antioxidants. Dark chocolate in particular contains a great deal of antioxidants, which help rid your body of cell-damaging free radicals. Steady consumption of antioxidant-rich foods is associated with a lowered risk of cancer and a slowing of the aging process.Reduced heart attack risk

The presence of flavanols in cocoa not only introduces antioxidants into the body, but the flavanols are also the ingredient best associated with lowered blood pressure and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. According to Diane Becker, M.P.H., Sc.D., a researcher at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, daily consumption of flavanol-rich dark chocolate can reduce the risk of heart attack by up to 50 percent due to its connection with slowing clotting in blood vessels.Weight loss

Over-consuming chocolate will lead to gaining unnecessary weight, but according to the University of Copenhagen, tempered chocolate intake can actually help you shed pounds. The research also showed that eating a small amount of dark chocolate on a daily basis helps curb your appetite for other sweets and fatty foods. By indulging your sweet tooth within reason, you will better overcome the mental hurdle that comes with cutting junk foods out of your diet.Rich in essential vitamins and minerals

Another added benefit of dark chocolate in particular is its high potassium, copper, magnesium and iron content. These vitamins and minerals are key components to ensuring your health: copper and potassium are useful in lowering your risk of stroke and heart disease; iron helps prevent anemia; and magnesium fights high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.Again, it should be noted that chocolate will only prove beneficial for your health if you consume it in an appropriate fashion.

The Greenwich Alliance for Education, and Maritime Chevrolet are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the year 1969 with a Trivia Night, Silent Auction! The event will be held on February 22 beginning at 7:00PM.

Dinner and drinks will also be made available. Proceeds will be used to raise funds for the Alliance Scholarship Fund. Disaster Preparedness Training

Disasters happen. It is extremely important to ensure your safety when the worst happens. From 8AM to 2PM on March 2nd at the Fairfield Regional Fire School Classroom, learn basics in disaster response, including disaster psychology, medical operations and team operations. Jen Edney Photography Exhibit

Sailing is a sport that requires dedication, training and a lot of willpower. Jen Edney is a photographer who captures all of it. Specializing in sailing photojournalism, Jen has clocked over 50,000 offshore miles in her time as a photographer. Her work has placed her in National Geographic’s list of :Nine Female Photographers who Push the Limits”. A Journey to Find the Perfect Bulb Light bulbs, they brighten up our lives. Ok, that was a lame pun, but after trying to move into my new house at 9:00PM, I realized most, if not all the light bulbs in my house were out. So I decided that I needed to do some lightbulb shopping. Now, I love to research everything about a product before I buy it. I want to make sure that I’m getting the most return on my investment that I can (take that Business 101). So, thus began my search into a rabbit hole. When I go to the hardware store (or IKEA), I see numerous different brands, technologies, and most importantly-prices. Incandescent, fluorescent, LED, the list goes on and on. So doing what I do best, I went down the rabbit hole of light bulbs. Here’s what I found. Incandescent is what I am most familiar with. Surprisingly, they burn the hottest which in turn uses more energy. I like to take care of the environment when I can, so I opted out of these ones. Plus, more energy means higher bills, right? Moving on from incandescent, I found myself staring at the world of fluorescent lights. While fluorescents offer energy efficiency, a long-light life and other cool features, the lights reminded me too much of an office workspace. Maybe these lights would work great for a garage or a workshop, but not where I live. At this point I thought I was set on the tried and tested incandescent lights. Then I found LEDs. LED lights appear to be the newest thing in lighting technology. They last up to 60,000 hours and cost a fraction of a penny to operate. So I did what any good son would do-I convinced my parents to get one for their home to see what it would look like before I invested in one. I helped them install an LED kitchen light, and it was so bright I’m sure the sun was even a bit jealous. I was sold. Some might even call it the light at the end of the tunnel. I bought enough LED lights to elevate my home to a new level of visibility. What I was not expecting was the dirty walls and floors to also be illuminated.
